Measles is a highly contagious virus that can easily be transmitted by simply being in a room with someone who has the virus. It usually presents with a viral illness type of condition where an infected person can develop a cough, runny eyes, fever and then a very typical rash. Severe cases can lead to pneumonia, inflammation of various body tissues including the brain. So far this October, 8 cases of measles have been confirmed in children in the Orthodox Jewish community of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The initial case was associated with recent travel to Israel. Another 11 confirmed cases were reported in Rockland County in both children and adults. To prevent contracting measles, all eligible children are urged to be vaccinated against this highly contagious virus. Parents should speak to their pediatricians if they have any questions or concerns as this issue is a potential risk to the public and to community health. Submitted bt Dr. Daniel Banilivi on behalf of the UMJCA Medical Advisory Committee.
