Passover Rice Information 2020

As per phone conversations with rice importers, Rabbi Eliyahu Ben Haiim has confirmed that the following brands of rice are 100% pure, no additives, or preservatives, or vitamins. Therefore, they are suitable for use for Passover. The following brands are: Colbeh – Deer – Devaaya – Dunar – Empire – Khazana – Kohinoor - Lal Qilla – Royal - Shahzada – Tilda – Zebra. Please contact your local rabbi for any questions. Please avoid using any enriched rice. Even though all these rices are pure, Jewish law requires that the rice be cleaned three times and washed thoroughly before use for Passover. Chag Kasher Vesameach. Submitted by Mojgan Liviem.

World Zionist Organization (WZO) Election

Dear Community Members, The Israel and Zionism Committee would like to inform you about a very important election coming up. If you are worried about the increase in anti-Semitism worldwide and are wondering if there is anything you could do to make a change, this is your opportunity. For the first time in history our community will participate in the World Zionist Organization (WZO) election. WZO was founded in 1897 by Theodor Herzl to promote Zionism, creating the World Zionist Congress as its governing body. Today the WZC is comprised of 3 branches: Israel delegates - U.S. delegates - Diaspora delegates. The U.S. branch is run by the American Zionist Movement (AZM) which conducts its elections as well. By casting our votes for one of the 13 “delegate slates” we will elect representatives/delegates to the World Zionist Congress (WZC). The delegates will represent us at the WZO meetings in Israel legislating and passing new laws. The delegates will make international legal decisions and strategic affairs regarding Israel as well as leadership decisions. They will pass resolutions that can lead to policy changes. Participating in the WZO elections is our chance to have our voices heard on critical issues facing Israel and the Jewish people. Every Jewish person 18 or older who resides in the U.S. can vote. For only $7.50 per person ($5.00 for 25 & under) and a minute to register and vote, we can make an impact on the future of Israel and the Jewish people. Please encourage others to get involved and vote. The Election is January 21- March 11. Go to www.ZionistElection.org to register. UMJCA is participating in this year’s WZC Election. The following Slates are recommended by UMJCA: ZOA – slate #11 - MIZRACHI (vote Torah) – slate #4. We strongly encourage everyone to take a few minutes and vote. Thank you, UMJCA Israel and Zionism Committee. For more information contact: Eli Kashi (516) 984-1004, Khandan Kalaty (516) 984-0229.
